Happiness and some classic books

The Beaumont Library District is one of 2,000 libraries selected to receive the 2007 We the People Bookshelf, a complete set of 15 classic hardcover books, related to the theme of “Pursuit of Happiness”. The library received the award from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

The award is part of the We the People Bookshelf program, which aims to encourage K-12 readers to explore significant American themes through classic works of literature. This grant program, presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities in cooperation with the American Library Association and supported by the United States Congress, encourages young people to read and understand great literature while exploring themes in American history. To date, the Beaumont Library has received three Bookshelf awards.

Special Library programming, sponsored by the Friends of the Beaumont Library, to introduce the We the People Bookshelf and highlight the “Pursuit of Happiness” theme is in the planning stage. The focus will be on engaging young people, as well as other members of the community, to reflect on the meaning of becoming American and motivate readers to examine these works.
