In a letter to his daughters, which Barack Obama publicly shared with us, he writes about how being a father changed his focus even as it brought him more happiness than any of his personal accomplishments. “I soon found,” he writes, “that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours.”
That is how a father should feel, and how most of them do feel. It is the unabashed seeking of one’s own happiness in the happiness of our children.
It is so simple and natural, so right, that one wonders how we managed to lose sight of it. Yet we did. Many of us came to view seeking our own joy as an unworthy pursuit.
