The pursuit of happiness is an increasingly popular chase, with a growing band of scientific studies dedicated to determining why some people smile while others are glum. In recent years, studies of what makes us happy have evolved from Hallmark sentiments and pop psychology into a well-regarded scientific field.
Now the science of happiness is wending its way into offices, schools, courtrooms and parliaments. Officials are being encouraged to take the findings of such studies into account when encouraging or discouraging particular behaviours, or when setting social and economic policies.
