Happiness as reflected glory

Happiness as reflected glory

As I've said and written many times before, happiness is a multifaceted and multidimensional construct that, as far as I'm concerned, includes a range of positive emotions such as…

  • joy

  • excitement

  • calm

  • contentment

  • satisfaction

  • pride

  • and so many more!

But it's pride that I want to focus a bit on today.

As we near the end of another year and as I attend my children's end of school year speech presentations I've felt an enormous pride I never thought I'd ever experience.

I'm sure I'm not alone in this and I'm sure all parents out there have similarly experienced this special type of happiness, pride, in their offspring.

But it's not just something parents can experience; pride in others and enjoying the success of others is something we can all enjoy…it could be the achievements of a colleague at work or a friend or a loved one or simply observing others (who we may or may not know) achieving and doing good things.

Pride in loved ones is just a subset of the pride we can and should all experience in humanity.

So many people do so many good and admirable things on a regular basis and the good news is, we can all enjoy the happiness that comes from the reflected glory or others; and we can use this glory and pride and positive emotion to inspire ourselves to do more good things.

What do you think? What's the proudest you've ever been of someone else…?
