How to minimise regret!

How to minimise regret!

Imagine your 80th birthday; and imagine, that like most people, you’re regretting all those things you didn’t do… …according to research, the top 5 regrets of the old and dying are:

  1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself; not the life others expected of me
  2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard
  3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings
  4. I wish I’d stayed in touch with friends
  5. I wish I’d allowed myself to be happier

Now everyone’s different, of course, but the reality is if you don’t have these exact 5, you’ll almost certainly have a similar list. But does it have to be like this?

Well, some regret toward the end of life is probably to be expected, but I was listening to some words of wisdom the other day from Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos.

And as a result, I’m happy to share with you today a wonderfully simple but potentially powerful strategy for regret minimisation! Here’s what I invite you to do…

  • imagine yourself when you’re 80 years of age
  • reflect upon all you’ve achieved AND all you don’t want to regret
  • work backwards from there to determine what you need to do to make this a reality by the time you’re 70, 60, 50 etcetera … back to your current age
  • Now you have a list of goals or action steps and all you need to do is schedule them in to your daily/weekly/annual calendar!

…So that’s today’s mailing. Take some time to reflect upon the message and how it might apply to you. Check out, also, the links below for some additional readings and resources.

I hope it helps you enjoy some more happiness. Until next time…

Keep well & keep smiling
